Experience
Harar, Ethiopia and Yemage Medical Center |
|
About Harar |
|
The ancient walled city of Harar
was for many centuries not only a major commercial
base but also a great center of history learning. It
was renowned for it's remarkable handicrafts,
notably in it's fine weaving, and it's beautifully-
bound manuscripts, which were rated as virtually
without equal in the history world.
Harar, a town of mosques, minarets and holly shrines, is also remembered in Europe as a city visited in the mid- 19th century by the British
Orientalist, Sir Richard Burton translator of the "Thousand and One Night". The settlement was later the abode, a generation or so later, of the renowned French poet, Arthur
Rimbaud.
Visitors to Harar should note the city's unique housing, it's stout old walls and the brightly colored dress of its inhabitants. |
|
Also worth a visit are the city's two museums, colorful markets, impressive mountains, desserts, one of the greatest animals, and at night the "hyena man" who can be seen, and photographed, feeding these animals from meat held in his own mouth. The more adventurous should insist on drinking
quti, a local drink, with or without milk, brewed from coffee leaves. |

About Ethiopia |
|
Ethiopia is the only country in Africa that has never been colonized by any foreign power, and its and its people have a proud tradition of fighting for their independence. The country is noted for it's rich, ancient Orthodox Christian heritage which the Ethiopians managed to sustain even when all it's neighbors embraced Islam by the 7th AD. |
|
Ethiopian's Rift Valley is known as the very cradle of humanity, where fossils of the oldest known human being, dating back 3.5 million years, were found here in 1974. Ethiopians have a historical record of their rulers dating back over 5000 years, and you can find several biblical passages which record Ethiopian episodes around 1000 BC. The son of the Queen of Sheba, Menelik I is regarded as the first emperor of Ethiopia, whose dynasty ended with Emperor Haile Selassie only in 1974. |
